After at least a couple of years in an Infantry battalion as an infantry soldier you may get the opportunity to specialise in a Fire Support element (i.e sniper, motars, recce, javelin). You would then have to complete the relevant course, which for snipers is very demanding. If successful you would join the sniper platoon as part of your battalion.

So if I joined as an Electrician with the Royal Enigeneers, I wouldn't be able to apply for Army Sniper selection? Or would I be able to join once I complete my All Arms Commando Course?

Yes, you would be able to apply to go on the snipers course. A lot of cap badges can put you forward for it. It’s a very difficult course but very rewarding

Thank you. Sniper selection is one of the main reasons I wanted to apply.

It wouldn’t be your main role though, which is what a lot of guys get confused about. You would still be what you signed up as

So you would be a sniper in your main role? So if I was for example a Sapper?

If you were in the Engineers, whichever trade you picked would be your main role
