You don't need any formal qualifications to join the Infantry.

Good Afternoon, Good question!

Like David said, there are no specific academic entry requirements for Infantry however during your career progression in the infantry you do require Functional Skills in Maths and English. The civilian equivalent to Level 2 Functional Skills that you need to reach the rank of Senior Non Commissioned officer (SNCO) for example in the UK is generally considered to be a GCSE at grades 4-9 (formerly A*-C). These qualifications are recognized as demonstrating a similar level of proficiency in these subjects and are often required by employers and for entry to further education.

If you have not got this the Army will give you the opportunity to achieve this while serving however Civilians can also take Functional Skills Level 1 and Level 2 courses in Maths and English. These courses are widely available and can be taken through various educational institutions, such as: Further Education (FE) Colleges, Community Centres and even Libraries, run educational programs, including Functional Skills courses.

These courses and qualifications are designed to help individuals improve their literacy and numeracy skills, and they will benefit you as personal development and career progression. So if you are able, I would always recommend you try and gain as much GCSE’s that you can before joining the Army. This will also help you with skills in the army and for you to have more freedom to transfer within different roles during your career, and of course life after the Army. That said if you are unable to achieve any GCSE’s the Army will definitely help you work towards achieving some qualifications before you leave.

I hope this helps!
