Staff Officer - Projects for People

Hi Glaeken, Thanks for your question. The answer is yes, absolutely. Officers are taught to lead from the front so they are always there with their soldiers. It is true that they have slightly different roles in combat: the Officer creates the plan and gives the orders; and the soldiers, as the subject matter experts, carry out the actions. But everyone is there together, working as one team. As an example, a Platoon Commander will be with their Platoon (of around 30 men and women) whilst they are out conducting patrols. Katie

Reconnaissance Platoon soldier

Glaeken, Infantry officers don’t get involved with fighting but will play a part in tactics with the section commanders. The section commander has his plan and the platoon commander will take a step back to observe and launch other sections to assist if needed. Essentially, when it comes to fighting troops, the section commander will lead the blokes with his plan but will be overseen and be discussed with the platoon commander. The company commander, who is one up from the platoon commander will oversee the whole picture in command of the company plan. J
