Additional skills development
Additional information
As I have been browsing several army roles I noticed that you are able to gain different skills with different roles. As I am considering a role of an Armourer I would like to know whether I would be able to gain different skills such as parachuting or HGV license for example. I would like to use maximum of the potential I am being given hence I would like to know whether it is a possibility.

Hi
so most of our trades get the opportunity to gain their driving licences through the Army, especially in Combat Service Support roles such as the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers where we need our technicians to have driving licences.
In addition, we offer numerous courses to all our Serving personnel. There are plenty of opportunities to get competencies in most sports and adventurous training such as parachuting. We also off educational qualifications too. This is one the reasons why many find the Army such a worthwhile career: you can continually professionally develop yourself in a way which suits you as an individual.

Hi, I was given an inhaler last year august 2019 for hayfever which I never used, I haven’t been prescribed one again, can I still join?

Hi Shannon, I am afraid we can't answer individual medical enquiries here.
The best option is to start an application on our website, during the application process our medical team will review your medical records and be able to provide you with an answer. It will depend on lots of different things (for example, more detail on why you needed the inhaler. Details of any other treatment/medication you have tried in the past. What symptoms you get from your hayfever etc..).

Additional skills question - yes absolutely. You can choose your post to be attached to 16 Air assault brigade where you can attend P company and gain your wings. With the British army’s vehicles being heavy/wide, most serving soldiers will gain a heavy good licence and even a heavy goods licence plus trailer (C+E)
There will be scope throughout your career to always develop your skills and qualifications

To answer the anonymous post from the Belizean citizen;
Currently if you are British, Irish, or from a Commonwealth country (which Belize is) you can apply to join the British Army. You don’t need UK citizenship or residency.
Places and roles for Commonwealth soldiers are limited but once you register your interest the recruitment team will contact you and let you know your options.
If you want to naturalise while you're serving, you'll need to pay all the costs and make sure you meet the Home Office's requirements. Your service can count towards the residency part of the requirements.
If you’re from a Commonwealth country and wish for your family to join you, you must meet the immigration rules and be able to pay for their visa and travel costs. For your family to come to the UK, you and your family must meet the minimum income and English language requirements. You should talk to your recruiter about your immigration circumstances and they will explain all the details.
I hope this helps but please feel free to come back to me if you’d like to know more.

Regarding additional skills to Rastislav K
There are numerous opportunities to develop skills in the Army outside of your core responsibilities. You mention HGV driving and parachuting. The majority of Armourers in the REME will leave phase 2 trade training with an HGV license due to the requirement for them to transport their mobile workshops on exercise and tours.
Parachuting in the Army takes roughly two forms - military parachuting and civilian jumping. The REME has their own dedicated parachuting team on the civilian side and I know plenty of Armourers who have completed P Coy and done their military jumps and then moved onto to gain qualifications in the civilian area too.
There are too many opportunities to list regarding extra skills and qualifications, the real key is taking them up.
If you have any further questions on the REME or this question thread let me know and I'll do my best to answer them.
Regards
Robbo

Hi Martyn,
Thanks for your question.
Your eligibility to rejoin would depend on your condition. I’m afraid we can’t answer personal questions pertaining to medical issues as each condition will be specific to that person and we don’t hold the full details of cases.
Either pop into your local armed forces careers office to enquire, or give the nrc a call on 03456008080. Have you regimental number ready so they can find you on the system easier.
Good luck.

To answer your question on additional skills development, yes you can get parachuting skills. You can get it through adventure training courses or by getting attached to a parachute regiment.
