What I wanted to know is when joining the Guards can you pick ceremonial duty’s only, combat duty’s only, or do you HAVE To do both?

If you join a regiment with ceremonial duty like the grenadier guards you need to do both they are and infantry regiment as much as they do the guard duty

The 5 foot guard regiment take in turns to carry out ceremonial - this is called on the blue line.

In this period you will still carry out overseas exercises, operational tours and day to day training as you would whilst off the blue line. You will also conduct the queens birthday parade while your on the blue line, it will be your turn to troop the queens colour every 4/5 years.
