There will be opportunities that come your way, which at first may not sound great, however, if you volunteer for those you will be rewarded. I volunteered to go to Kosovo for 6 weeks, in return I was picked to go skiing for a week in Italy, all paid for by the Army. I loved both experiences and have never regretted that decision.

One of the main reasons I wanted to join the Army was to be able to travel the world whist getting paid to do so. I have travelled to a number of countries that I would never have been to without the Army, from Belgium to Oman, to Kosovo and Italy. I’ve also managed to go away and Ski, Snorkel, Rock climb and Kayak.

Only an individual who has completed the 14 weeks of training can understand what standing on a parade square, feels like. You are stood on a square with people you didn’t know 14 weeks ago, who you have spent every second, of everyday with, who are now your mates, in front of your family and friends.

I honestly believe it's worth at least trying life in the Army. If you don't like it, you can leave with a story to tell, and you'll have gained some life skills. If you do like it, you'll have a rewarding career that you can be proud of, you'll grow in confidence, find mates for life, and see the world. The army application process is quite unique and it’s an experience in itself. Even if you're unsuccessful you'll have that story to tell and you'll definitely have learned something about yourself. Also, most times, just because you've been unsuccessful doesn't mean you can't try again.

It is important to always remember the Armies Values and Standards, notably the 'CDRILS'. Courage, Discipline, Respect for Others, Integrity, Loyalty and Selfless Commitment. Throughout your career, you will be tested on these things, whether on camp, or on Operations. As soldiers, it is our duty to follow these values, these help make us efficient in all aspects of our jobs.

The army is more than what is seen in dramatised film and television. It’s a group of had working individuals who have learnt to be a part of the army, learnt their strengths and weakness, learnt what kind of job and job role suits them best. There is so much opportunity it is impossible to write it all here but information about the army has never been so easily accessible. The wealth of insight that can be gleaned, to help you determine the right career path in the army, is massive and can help you decide.
