Hi Lily,

Thanks for your question.

To be a driver you wouldn’t need to change trades, that is one of the trades that the Army Foundation College Harrogate will train you for.

There are two courses, a long and short course. To be a Driver in the Royal Logistic Corps you would complete the short course; A 20 week course with three weeks off mid-term.

The Army Foundation College Harrogate doesn’t train people to become Dog Handlers, so if that were something you wanted to peruse you would have to look to transfer once you were at your final unit. Just be aware that it is a small trade and is very popular so is quite competitive.

I hope this helps but if you want to know more please come back to me.

No, you can go to a unit before you are 18. You wouldn’t be able to deploy on operations until you were 18 but you could do everything else including courses and exercises.

And during training and once you have finished, do you pay part of your salary towards food and housing whilst living in barracks?

Your accommodation charges will be taken directly from your wages, but you will be responsible for paying for your food as and when you eat (which is called ‘Pay As You Dine’).
