The 44 week commissioning course is broken into 3 terms. Each term there will be a couple of big exercises with 'Final Ex' in Senior Term being a 2 week exercise.
Exercises start off as a gentle introduction - how to live in the field, how to conduct a platoon attack etc and they build up over your time at Sandhurst. The exercises have a different 'theme' (from digging small shell scrapes to whole trench digging with a wriggly tin roof, to a mock up Chemical, biological Warfare attack). One of my favourites was a navigation exercise over 2 days where you go, in teams with no directing staff, and have to reach various check points in a certain time frame. Exercises are designed to put into practice things you have learnt during your time at RMAS. They are designed to give every OCdt the opportunity to take on a role such as Platoon Commander, radio operator, Company Sergeant Maj - as examples. They are learning opportunities as well as testing you and putting you in positions you might not think you'd be able to do initially. Some exercises might seem rubbish but looking back later as a Pl there's always opportunites to laugh about it! Sometimes an exercise that you might dread might be the one you most enjoy!
