How does the 6 week annual leave work?

Are you able to request the dates off you want or is leave allocated based on battalions needs? If so is enough notice given in advance so holidays can be planned with family? And is leave often cancelled last minute and rearranged with short notice?

Leave will generally be around the same periods

Bank holidays
Depending on what your on etc
