Additional information

I was wondering whether you have to attend a British medical school or if you would still be eligible for the bursary if you attend an Irish medical school? At the moment I would like to specialize in urology. Would this be possible, and if not what would my options be? Also, I was wondering whether I would be able to engage in research during my years of service? Would I get learning credits from the army, and if so what could they be put towards? Personally I like the idea of deploying. I was wondering would I get many opportunities to do this while in the army? Just as a matter of interest, have you deployed much throughout your time? And how did you find deployment Sorry about all the questions; and thank you in advance for answering them :)

I don't know the difference between medical schools between Britain and Ireland some countries will have to do a conversion course whilst others will allow you to apply straight way the GMC (General medicines council) should be able to give you this answer. You would always be encouraged to research during your time to better yourself however most medical officers specialise in emergency medicine or general medicine which are two routes that are available I'm am not aware about other routes however this is something that would need to be discussed with the Professionally qualified officer team. Learning credits are available to all personnel in the British Army, there are two different types Standard Learning Credits (SLCs) and Enhanced Learning Credits (ELCs). ELCs are only available of 6+ years of service both of which are only available for certain courses most of which are covered with justification as to why you want to do them, these will be discussed with the education centre at the time. As a MO you would get deployed as per operational requirement this will be very often compared to a lot of other roles myself as a CMT have been deployed to three different countries so far but many others have been to more depending on what unit you are attached to will also affect this. Each deployment is different depending on why you are going there and what your task is so everyone will see this differently. Hope this helps.

Hello, Just to add to what Jordan has already said; I don't think you can get a bursary for studying at an Irish University (a good friend studied in Dublin and had to wait until she started the foundation training programme and then applied as a direct entrant, this was 6 years ago though so worth contacting recruitment directly to ask). The Army offers lots of different specialties, but what they offer varies from year to year based on the current requirements. Urology is not usually on the list, but general surgery is, as well as things like T&O and plastics. Anaesthetics, EM, GP, Public Health, General Medicine and Psych are also normally available every year. Loads of research opportunities, I would be surprised if you got through GDMO without taking part in research in some format. Similarly deployments and overseas exercises are hard to avoid! I very much enjoyed my trips away, they were all very different, but great in their own way.
