Royal signals: network engineer, I'm really keen to develop my skills and also see the world, is this a good role?
Additional information
I would like to develop my skills as I'm interested in IT. Can I expect to go overseas in the signals, if so how often and where?. If not is there a better role relating to IT where I can travel?. How long does it also take to gain a driving licence in the army?

Hi Joseph, apologies so late getting back to you on this...don't always see every question that gets raised, but here it is. I am myself a Network Engineer and you can absolutely get to do those two things (as well as many others). I've served for nearly 10 years and had the opportunity to go to Canada, Belize, Estonia, Norway, Germany and a few others so you can rest assured your passport will get a few stamps! And as for development of IT skills, the Royal Corps of Signals are the IT and Communication specialists for the British Army, and communication comes in many forms, you can expect to become an SME (Subject Matter Expert) in a lot of them. With the advancements of IT over recent years in the world we live, and the environments we work in within the Military, harnessing IT with experienced, technical and proactive Soldiers at the forefront give our nation and our allies an operational advantage when we need it most - and you can expect to be a part of that should you wish to. As for driving licences, you can realistically expect to start that part of your training around the latter part of your technical trade training at Blandford Forum, Dorset. The home of the Corps and 11th Signal Regiment. All your major training will take place here (apart from Basic which will likely be Pirbright or Winchester ATC). Blandford has its own set of instructors that are all DSA qualified so you will also take your tests at Blandford, for whatever licence you need. Be it car or HGV. Being Signals, it is likely you will get Cat B (Car), Cat C (HGV) and Cat C+E (HGV with trailer). And importantly, you won't pay a single penny for any of these, and you will still receive your normal income as a Soldier for the whole time you are learning and taking these tests. Which cost thousands of pounds, at least. I hope that helps Joe, and again sorry this is late. But all the best for the future in whatever you choose to do, and if you have already applied/looking to join, welcome :) Any other questions don't be afraid to ask. Take it easy, Frank
