Thank you for the question! How much you have to carry will depend on your role and trade in the army. For every infantry soldier in the new fitness standards you will be expected to carry 40kg for 4km, then 25kg over 2km. On exercise and deployments the load you will regularly carry will usually be between 20-40kg. However at this point you will have trained and be used to the weight. For non-infantry roles the loads will usually be lighter as you will carry various other types of specialist kit. From my personal experience the weight you carry is something you do not have to worry about as it is something you get used to very quickly! Hope this answered your question! Piers

Hi serena, thank you for the question. We don’t expect you to run before you can walk. As long as you achieve the required entry standard for whatever role you choose to pursue, the qualified instructors at your basic training unit will do the rest. The standards are different across the board depending on the role but during phase 1 you will be built up and conditioned to carry the required weight to pass the output tests. I wasn’t the greatest at carrying weight when I first joined the army but the physical training instructors (pti’s) at my phase 1 did what they do best and got me conditioned good to go. I hope this helps!
