What’s the food situation? Can I cook my own food? If so is this normal behaviour?

The vast majority of camps/bases will have a cookhouse/diner. You can get your 3 meals a day from here. You can also cook your own food of course yeah. Some places might vary though due to the facilities. You can even go out for you food if you like. Normal day to day, you aren't bound to camp like a prison.
