From Tank Commander to Social Media in one career
My first important career move is when i applied to join the Royal Tank Regiment.
I visited the Regiment when they were firing their tanks in Wales. I knew then that i wanted to be the biggest thing on the battlefield. When people think of the Army they think of tanks and i wanted to be a part of that world so i applied and earned a place.
Second important career move was to pursue Media as an alternate career stream.
I was given the opportunity to travel close to the Antarctic to be the media officer for the Falkland Islands. It was the best opportunity i have ever taken and let me experience amazing things. I have driven a warship, been winched from a helicopter onto a mountain side and had wild penguins come and sit right next to me.
Third important career move was to change the path i was taking in the Army.
After the Falklands i knew i wanted to pursue Media and Communications for the majority of my career. I have managed the Social Media for the Army and NATO and have commanded a Combat Camera Team as we sought to tell the Army Story. This new path seen me travel all over the world, from Mongolia, Finland and China to South Korea, USA and most of Europe. Just need to find a story to tell in Africa and Australia now
I started as a Tank Commander and turned my career into something i loved and gave me opportunities i would never have had as a civilian.
I get to show people why joining the Army is a great opportunity
Through my love of media and communications i am broadening my skillset to include marketing. Working with people to show why the Army is a great employment opportunity.
I have found a place i truly call home and want other people to experience that. The best way is to show all the Army has to offer and to help people find the path thats right for them, just as i have.
Find what drives you and pursue it
My motivations are knowing that my time and effort makes a difference. I joined the Army because i wanted to have a job that meant something surrounded by people that wanted the same. As long as i know and feel i am making a difference that is all that matters.
Find a role you love, surrounded by a community that supports you.
I loved being a Tank Commander, i worked alongside some of the best people in the Army. That community is why i joined the Royal Tank Regiment. I was surrounded by people who i liked and allowed me to be myself.
Although i have changed path in the Army i always have my Regimental family to return to. They form the foundation of my new skillset and taught me lessons that make me successful today.
My work has been seen by millions of people globally.
Through working in media my work has been seen by millions. From the 2million people on social media who learnt how to make a cup of tea on a tank to news articles written in languages i dont understand, as a British Army soldier i have had a global impact. If you believe in yourself you can achieve things you never thought possible.
