Katie -.
Staff Officer - Projects for People
Hi there,
Thank you for your question.
The primary role of any infantry soldier is to close with and engage the enemy, but the Parachute Regiment is seen as a specialism within itself due its method of entry.
Within the Parachute regiment you could learn to operate a number of weapon systems including: the Rifle, the Sharpshooter, Underslung Grenade Launcher, and the Light Mortar. You could specialise as a sniper, anti-tank or mortar operator. You will also gain your category B (car) or C (HGV) driving license. You may be able to train in Jungle Warfare, and as an instructor in certain areas.
I hope this helps answer your question.

James A.
Reconnaissance Platoon soldier
The light machine gun and light support weapon are no longer in service. The sharpshooter has now taken its place as a medium range weapon system.
The Paras have 3 regiments with 3 different roles.
1 para are based in RAF st athan in a special forces fire support group
2 and 3 para are based in Colchester in 16 air assault brigade.
Like most infantry units, you can specialise in various roles listed below
Rifleman/paratrooper/guardsman
Anti tank operator
Mortar platoon operator
Signal platoon operator
Physical training instructor (PTI)
Motorised transport platoon
Sharpshooter
Sniper
Reconnaissance platoon operator
These are to name a few
Hope this helps
