Can an infantry officer do a specialism such as reconnaissance for example

As an Infantry Officer, the very first job you will have to do is a Platoon Commander for 18 months to two years, after that you can apply for one of the specialist trades within the Infantry. You have to be a Platoon Commander first so you get to know the role and the soldiers under your Command, it is the same for soldiers. They have to do time as a soldier to learn the job, then they can apply to do a specialist trade later on. But because of timelines and promotions, you might not end up getting the trade you wanted and might end up doing something completely different. You might apply to become the Recce Platoon Commander but end up getting Fire Support Group Platoon Commander instead.
