Royal Military Police NCO
Hello,
The RMP and Infantry are two completely different and unique trade groups within the British Army.
The RMP are the policing specialists of the British military and are responsible for upholding law and maintaining discipline no matter where we are deployed around the world.
The Infantry are our ground combat specialists. Although I have served in the British Army for 16 years, my skills in a combat situation would be nowhere near as good as those of an Infantry soldier.
That being said, we are all trained as soldiers first and you will often find a member of the RMP working alongside our Infantry counterparts on operations; simply because we have skill sets that they do not possess and regularly need to call upon.
In addition to what I have already said above, we also have Close Protection (CP) teams. Our CP operators are highly skilled body guards who operate throughout the world protecting key military figures and government officials in areas where there is a risk of hostilities. Our CP operators are the closest thing we have to Infantry however, their skill set is completely different. A CP team is about keeping a person safe and alive, this means withdrawing from a fight in a controlled manner, whereas Infantry will want to dominate the ground and take the fight to the enemy. Hopefully this makes sense. One thing to note though is that our CP teams are not usually permanently assigned to that role. They are normally at one of our policing locations and called forward to deploy.
Let me know if there is anything you want clarifying and I will do my best.
Greg
