There are a variety of qualifications that you can gain up to the rank of Sgt ranging from Literacy/Numeracy Level 1/2 all the way up to a Foundation Degree in Business Administration and beyond. Some courses such as ALDP (The old CLM courses) are mandatory and must be completed prior to taking up a new rank.
