i’m also aware you aren’t a royal engineer but there isn’t anyone on here who i think would know better. I just want to make sure joining the engineers doesn’t limit my combat opportunities

Good Morning
All Royal Engineers are first and foremost Combat Engineers. They do not however, primarily, close with the enemy. They are not teeth arms. They are however a robust Combat support element. There are plenty of opportunities within the RE to expand the experience you have. Commando, Para and SF opportunities are open to all soldiers providing they meet the standards.
As you have stated, I am not a Sapper, but I have worked with them and they are a really good Corps.
