Hi, I think there's a common misconception that being a soldier is running around all day every day with a gun and never being allowed out from camp. Only 33% of the Army is Infantry - and they don't spend all day every day handling weapons. Being a soldier is no different from going to a normal job for the day - 0830am-4.30/5pm but you get to do physical training or sports afternoon etc. Depending on your job role would depend what you do day to day for example: A military clerk - would be doing much the same as a normal admin clerk in an office but looking after soldiers - their pay, leave, checking their documentation is up to date, maybe doing some training, maybe getting involved with whatever unit activity is going on. You might find some clerks are Physical Training Instructors so they might be working in the gym (like you'd have people working in a leisure centre). A Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer (REME) would be doing the same sort of jobs (on different vehicles) as you'd find in your local garage etc. The Army is self sufficient; we have chefs, medics, nurses, engineers, musicians, communication specialists, teachers, police officers, cyber engineers - really every job you can think of (and maybe some you can't - like a farrier!) except midwives and hair dressers! Lots of serving soldiers don't live on camp - they drive to work every day as you would if you worked in Tesco etc. Soldiers have lives outside of the army and many are involved in outside sports clubs, music groups or just have other hobby clubs etc. If you are not on duty or exercise you work during a normal week and your weekend if your own - where you wish to spend that is entirely up to you - as long as you make it back to work (usually by 10am on a Monday!). We get 33 days leave a year too+ bank hols. I'm biased but i love being a soldier, the army is a job but it is also something more. As someone who left and rejoined there's no job that beats the camaraderie and being part of the best and largest team there is.
