Hi there,
Thanks for your question.
1 RIFLES are a Light Infantry Battalion, trained to deploy worldwide at short notice with light scales of equipment, into terrain ranging from mountains to jungle. They are based in Chepstow, Gloucestershire.
2 YORKS are a Light-Mechanised Infantry Battalion which operates out of the FOXHOUND vehicles and are experts in dismounted close combat. They are based in Catterick and whilst they recruit nationwide and from commonwealth countries, Yorkshire and Teeside are considered their home counties.
All infantry soldiers will start with a Combat Infantry Course at The Infantry Training Centre Catterick (ITC(C)). This is a 28 week course where they compete their basic training and Infantry training (Phase 1 & 2). They learn essential skills such as survival, first aid and map reading while building stamina and fitness. Following this, when selected for their units, they will compete any additional required courses such as driver and maintainer courses.
Remember that the vehicles infanteers use are to deliver them up close to the enemy, they will then dismount to fight through a position so they must all be skilled combatants.
Mounted units will also inevitably spend more time on vehicle maintenance, but all units, even dismounted ones have vehicles which support them so this is an important part of any unit. Dismounted units will tend to spend more time on physical training to ensure they are fit enough to cover large distances with heavy loads.
Day to day things look the same at most units. You will spend time: doing exercise to keep fit; looking after your kit and equipment (be that Personal, Section, Platoon, Company or Battalion level); conducting military training such as weapon handling, map reading, infantry skills; completing career courses either to do with your trade or more genetic things such as driving; and doing personal development courses.
I hope this helps a little but feel free to come back to me if there is anything else I can help with.
Katie
