How does the role of an officer differ from the role of a soldier in a combat situation?

In short - An officer takes an over watch position where he and now she can see the assault going forward. If need be, they will launch further sections to assist. An overall command role but from in an over looking position.

The section commander who is a corporal/lsgt will guide his/her men/women through the assault/attack with a plan that has been confirmed with the platoon commander. Everyone will be in loop via a radio so everyone knows what’s happening. Once the threat is no longer, the platoon commander will send a sit rep up notifying his or her superior what has happened.
