Officer Commanding British Army Band Sandhurst
Hi Thomas, thanks so much for your message.
The Royal Corps of Army Music do employ pianists, although the requirement is slightly limited as the piano is not one of our primary performance instruments in most Bands.
In terms of the audition, I don't believe there is a set duration that pieces should be, or a specified grade (although we do advise as a ball park that the minimum audition standard is around Grade 5/6). We're definitely looking for musical potential rather than the finished article though. If invited for an audition you should select 2 contrasting pieces that challenge you and show off your ability, but equally that you are confident playing.
You would be best to discussing your specific circumstances with our experts on the Corps Engagement Team. Email them at [email protected], or get in touch by following this link and completing their enquiry form: https://forms.gle/hth5FLA9hD43HXYz7. They will be able to give you the most accurate information on if pianists are currently being recruited and the specifics of the application and audition process.
In the meantime follow us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Royalcorpsofarmymusic/), Instagram (@corps_army_music) and Twitter (@corpsarmymusic) to check out what we get up to.
Stay in touch and let me know if you need any further information,
Bethan
