Recruiting Co-Ordinator at ACC Norwich
Good Morning and Thanks for your question,
There are a few different options for becoming a driver in the British Army.
You could become a driver in the Royal Logistic Corps; Which involves moving all kinds of equipment from transporting fuel and ammunition, to transporting tanks and other armoured vehicles to the locations where they're needed, and so much more. You will be given all of your lessons and tests required for driving all kinds of vehicles in the army and these will remain on your licence once you leave the army too which is a huge bonus.
You could become a driver/crewman in the Royal Armoured Corps. This is the most combat oriented driving role you can choose outside of the Infantry, as a crewman in the Royal Armoured corps you will start life as a driver for light role such as Jackal, medium armour Such as AJAX or Warrior or heavy armoured vehicles such as Challenger 2. As before, you will be given all of the lessons and tests required to gain these licences and progress to different positions within the crew such as gunner, loader and then finally commander, depending on which role you are in.
You could become a driver in the Royal Engineers, as above you will be given all the training and tests required to gain the required licences. This role will include driving bridge laying vehicles and being a part of these crews which can include becoming a crane operator, also other areas of opportunities regarding driving vehicles such as road rollers and Explosive Ordinance Disposal/Route clearing vehicles etc.
Another driving role could be obtained in the Royal Signals as a Supply Chain Operative, This role is essentially moving and setting up a lot of signals and radio equipment whilst also supporting other roles in the intelligence, IT and communications area of expertise. This role has a wide range of opportunities and things to gain from the job itself and more.
In terms of joining the Infantry and becoming a driver, this will depend on the regiment you join following your basic training and the role which they are in. The main roles conducted by the various infantry regiments are; Mechanised Infantry, Armoured Infantry, Light Role infantry and Specialised Infantry. Some of these roles involve a lot of driving and others do not so you wouldn't be joining the infantry as a driver, it would be something that you would work towards after completing your training and joining your unit.
As well as these options, many more roles in the army will be able to offer you plenty of driving experience in any role you choose and with all of the training required alongside it too.
Hope this has answered your question.
