Warrant Officer Recovery Mechanic

Firstly having an interest in a job role is a good place to start. I believe (you can double check this at the Armed \forcers Careers office, or online under British Army job roles website) that you must hold a minimum of A-D grade of GCSE's in maths, science and English in order to pursue a career as a mechanic. If you old a higher qualification (Degree level in Engineering) then you may wish to consider a career as a REME officer. As a vehicle mechanic you will be given training and qualified to an appropriate standard at the Defence School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (DSEME) over a period of 6-9 months, including acquiring certain driving licences (if not already held) such as heavy goods (C+E) and potentially H Cat licence (for A type Mechanics that specialise on heavy tracked armoured systems such as Challenger Main Battle Tank). B type mechanics specialise on wheeled platforms. Once you have completed your initial trade training (on completion of basic military training) you will be assigned to a Unit/location for a period of 2-4 years. After 6 months of arriving in Unit you will complete your Class 2 trade status by completing a portfolio of various trade related tasks such as engine, gear box changes as an example. At around the 4 year point you will look to complete your Class 1 trade training which will require you to return to DSEME for a further 6 months of training. On completion of this their is an opportunity to complete further training/assessment to be selected for Artificer training which in essence allows you to complete an 18 month HND/HNC in mechanical engineering. This creates other opportunities such as promotion and increase of pay.
